We have over 14,000 users in our local domain and over 65,000 nationwide and found the easiest to manage naming conventions includes a 3 hex digit ID of the segment followed by 3 hex digits for the device. A leading Alpha designation specifies server, workstation, printer, router, switch, etc. The unique final 3 digits of servers are assigned by function: AD, Member Server, SMS server, etc.

Thus, we know exactly what kind of device is sending an alert and where to locate it. A searchable database by segment also gives us the local contact for the site, etc.
